How to create new pages

1. Log in to your wiki at my.pbwiki.com and chose tokillamockingbirdprojectpage.

2. Click "Create new page" at the top of your wiki

- Type "English Syllabus" into the page title and click "Create new page"

- Once you type something on the page (anything! It's ok!), click "Save"

 

 

Link pages together

To navigate from one page to another, you'll want to link pages together. (Unlinked pages are called "orphans," and that's no fun.)

1. Go to your wiki's front page and click "Edit"

2. Type "whatever you want "

3. Select the text and click the "Insert link" button (the chainlink icon on your tool bar)

4. Choose "Link to wiki page" and locate "English Syllabus"

5. Once you click "Ok" and "Save," you'll see that your page now links to your English Syllabus page

You can now set up as many pages as you want and link them together!

 

 

Video, audio, and chat rooms, oh my!

You can insert all kinds of multimedia applications on your workspace with just a few clicks. Let's insert a sample video:

1. Upload your video to Teachertube.com

2. Copy the embed code to your video

3. Go to your workspace http://tokillamockingbirdprojectpage.pbworks.com

4. While editing, click "Insert Plugin" and choose the "You Tube" plugin. Paste your embed code and save your page.

• The Calendar plugin lets you insert a shared calendar for setting dates and milestones for your classroom/library
• Chat rooms let your students or staff communicate with each other. This is a great additional way for you and your students to collaborate

Here's a special way to get free storage space: Because of a special arrangement with a third party, if you upload your videos through our Video plugin (or embed through YouTube), your videos won't consume workspace storage space.

 

 

Inserting images

• It's best to save images to a file in Your Documents folder as jpg images before beginning!
• Click the "Pages & Files" tab on top of your workspace page.
• On the files page, click the "Upload files" button.
• Select the file you'd like to upload.  If you'd like to upload multiple files, please hold down the CTRL key (to add a file to the list of selected files) or the SHIFT key (to select a range of files) when choosing files from your computer.  NOTE: To ensure a smooth uploading experience, please avoid uploading files with extremely long file names.  If you're having an issue uploading a file with a long name, please try renaming the file and attempting to upload the file again.  Also, you may only upload up to ten files at a time with this uploader.
• Click the "Open" or "Select" button to upload the files to your workspace.
• A window will then pop-up to show you the progress of your files to be uploaded.  Cancelling queued uploads is easy, just click on the "Cancel Uploads" button.
• Your successfully uploaded files will appear in your workspace's list of files.
• Go into "Edit Mode" on any page by clicking the edit tab.
• Click "Images and Files" tab under the "Insert Links" "Page Tool" on the right-side of your screen.
• Click the Upload Files, which will cause a browser window to appear.
• When you locate the file, click on it, and then click “Open”.  You can select up to ten files to upload at one time.
• After uploading, the file will appear in your file list. 
• Click on the text of the file name to insert it into your workspace.   If it's an image file, (PNG, JPEG, or GIF), it will be inserted as an image wherever the cursor is located in the editor.  If it's any other kind of file, then the file will be inserted as a link.

To Create a Footnote on your wiki page

To add a footnote, just click with your mouse where you would like the citation to be then choose insert plugin from the PBwiki Magic menu, choose footnote and then paste your text in here, click preview and then okay.  Save to see your footnote in action.

 

Edit Lock/Stealing Locks

The edit lock is a feature we have in place to prevent two people from editing the same workspace page at the same time.  There is no way to turn it off. If you are editing a page, no one else will be able to unless one of these things happens:

 

    * You save the page.

    * You hit cancel and don't save your changes.

    * You make no changes on the page for five minutes or more.

 

If you leave the page alone for more than 5 minutes, another user can "steal" editing privileges from you. This cancels your changes and they can make their own changes.  Save often and work cooperatively to edit.  This will require some communication between yourself and others working on your page.

 

Basic Rules for Embedding Tools from Web 2.0 Applications

• Create whatever it is that you are creating (Glog, Prezi, Slideshare, Voki, etc.)
• Find the embed or html code for your creation.  Sometimes this is found by exploring "SHARE" options.
  
• The embed code is the html code that you will need to insert into the wiki.  If you cannot find a way to grab the code, you cannot embed your tool in the wiki.  There may be other options.  Ask Mrs. Nocita for help.
• Copy the code and navigate to your wiki page. 
• Enter Edit mode and go to the Insert menu. 
• Choose <>HTML/Java Script
• You will get a box in which you can paste your code. 
• Click Next and then insert plugin. 
• You will see a green box with the plugin until you save the page. 
• Once you save the page, you should see your plugin! 
• You can monkey with the code to alter the size by looking for the height and width.  The numbers don't correspond with any specific measurements so you can play around by increasing or decreasing the numbers equivalently.

   1. Create your wordle

   2. Click "Save to Gallery"

   3. Copy the embed code

 NOW ON YOUR WIKI:

1. Click "edit"

 Alternate Wordle Instructions (if you want a different size to appear in your wiki)

Complete your wordle but instead of embedding the html code, hit the print screen button on your keyboard to take a picture of your wordle.  Open up Paint (under Accessories) and paste the picture into Paint.  Cut out the parts of the picture that you do not want.  (Unfortunately, you can't just crop the picture.  You have to cut out what you don't to see.)  When you are satisfied with the image, select save as...title it and save as a jpeg file to your documents.  Then you can upload the image to your wiki and insert.

5. Be sure to leave a margin on the right side of your glog or some of your images may be cut off when it displays on your wiki

10. Scroll down to the bottom of your completed project to find the code to embed into your page

Now on Your Wiki:

Once you have completed your Glog, scroll down and copy the embed code.

Animoto lets you create short videos from pictures and video.  You upload the images, choose the music, and Animoto does the rest.   Animoto allows for free 30 second videos.  If you need a longer video, see Mrs. Nocita for help.

Cool Text is a free Web based graphics editor that lets one create buttons and logos for use on Web pages. To create a button or logo:

1. Select a style or design.
2. Then you are taken to a screen where you can type in your text, select a font (1200 to choose from!), choose colors for the font, background, etc.
3. When you are satisfied, click the Render Logo (or Button) button at the bottom of the screen.
4. Wait a few moments until your logo or button is rendered. If you like what you see, SAVE the logo or button by clicking the Download Image link. If you do not like the result, click the Edit this Logo (button) link. 
5. Tip: If you are making buttons, just click Edit this Button after downloading the first. Change the text, and render again. Repeat the edit and rendering process until you have made all of the buttons that you need.

How do I embed into my wiki?

To use your logo or buttons:

1. Upload them into your wiki by clicking the Images and Files tab. 
2. Click Browse and locate your button/logo.
3. Once you locate your button/logo, click Open to upload.
4. In Edit mode, put your cursor where you want to place your button/logo, and click on the image in the images and files window. You should see the image on the screen.

How do I Embed Dipity?   

Much like XTimeline, Dipity allows the user to create timelines and embed them onto a wiki, blog, website, etc. This would be an excellent to document and reflect on your wiki progress and process!

1. Create an account on the Dipity website.
2. Click "Get Started" and enter title, etc. for your timeline.
3. Click "Add an Event" and enter title, etc. for your event.  You can easily add photos, links, and even videos using the Dipity template.
4. Continue until all events have been added.
5. When your timeline is complete, click "Embed," located on the right above your timeline.  This will give you the HTML code you need in order to ebed your timeline onto your wiki using the HTML Magic Plugin.

 

Google Gadgets

How do I embed Google Gadgets?

1. Go to the edit mode of your wiki
2. Click "insert plugin" --- >HTML & Gadgets---> Google gadget
3. Click "here" and search the google directory for the plug in you would like to use
4. Modify your plug in and then copy the embed code (at the bottom of the page)
5. Return to your wiki tab and paste the embed code information into the preview box.
6. Click preview and OK.
7. Press save and you're done!

 

Go Animate

How do I embed Go Animate into my wiki?

Go Animate turns pairs your words with characters to create cool animations.  Go to http://goanimate.com and sign up. 

When you have created your goanimation you choose to make it public and share your animation. By choosing the <> button it will give you the code to embed it into your wiki.

 You have lots of options for editing your animation, the characters can be animated, made to move or handle props, you can change to a large number of scenes, add music, special effects, props.. there's plenty of room for creativity.

How do I Embed My studiyo?   

1. To create a Mystudiyo Quiz, you must first have a Mystudiyo account.  Signing up is free and easy through their website.
2. Once your account is active, you are ready to "Create Quiz"-located near the top of the page, or "Create Now!"-located in the big box in the center of the page.
3. Start by selecting your quiz style:
• Create & Go - My quiz below falls into this category
• User Can Add - Allows users to add their own questions to your quiz.  While this might be a good option in some classes, especially as an AP review, I don't trust my freshmen to add questions to my quiz...at least not in the beginning.
• How "X" Are You - I'll play with this option more later.
4. Next, select the skin you want for your quiz.
5. Then give your quiz a name and decide whether or not you want to add an introduction media.  This will play everytime someone accesses your quiz, so choose wisely.  Music and video are sometimes distracting.
6. Now you are ready to add questions.
• Type your first question in the space provided.
• Add up to four multiple choice answers.  Be sure to check the box for the correct answer.
• Select the media you want played with your question.  This is an excellent place to add video.
• Decide whether or not you want to set a time limit for each question and reply accordingly.
•  Submit your question.
• Repeat until you have included all of your desired questions.
7. Once your quiz is complete, click on "Next" at the top of the page.  This will allow you to choose your quiz ending - either a scoreboard or DIY.
8. Finally, click on "Next" at the bottom of the page.  This will give you the HTML code that can be added to your wiki.

How Do I Embed Mystudiyo?  To embed a Mystudiyo quiz onto a page in your wiki, copy the HTML code from Step 8 above into the HTML & Gadgets plugin from your wiki toolbar.

Use images, text, and narration or music to tell a story.  The library desktop computers all have Photostory 3 installed.

How do I Embed ToonDoo?    

Toondoo is a web application that allows anyone to create cartoons.  It allows for an easy way for students to create cartoons as well as share them with other students.  The user can select from several different formats such as single or double panel cartoons.  From there they can add pictures, text, cartoon drawings, and change the background.  All of this is done through an easy to use intuitive interface.  Overall, this web application allows for easy sharing of these creations with users all over the internet. 

To embed your cartoon on a wiki, simply select embed and copy the code.  Navigate to your wiki and click on Insert Plugin and then, HTML & Gadgets.  Choose html/java script and paste the code in the box.  Click preview and then, save the page.  See the directions on the PBWorks page for more information.

How do I Embed VOKI?

Create a talking avatar with the voice and words of your choice in any language.  You can record your own voice and have the caricature speak it when clicked on.  Or you can type the text that you want the animated talking head to say and choose a language and a voice.  (Spanish, for example, has several male and female voices from different parts of the world.)  I plan to make several messages that students can click and listen to.

To embed your Voki code:

1) Click edit

2) go to "insert Plugin" -- > HTML & Gadgets--> ANY GOOGLE GADGET

(this is different than regular HTML, so you need to use a different plugin)

3) paste the Voki code into the Google Gadget box

4) Press preview ---> OK

5) SAVE!

Create your slide show.  Upload photos from your file and then customize your slide show.  You will have to register with an email address to publish and get your embed code but you can make your slide show private.

• Sign up for the Basic survey which is free and permits 100 responses per survey.
• With the free version, you are only allowed 10 questions per survey and many features are disabled, such as adding a custom logo and creating a custom thank-you page, among many other features.

• Click the icon that says "Join Now for Free," and it will allow you to pick a username and password, and you will be required to enter your contact Email address.
